FreeHand from Adobe is a vector-based graphics and drawing program that is mainly used by graphic designers , illustrators , finalists , cartographers , designers and artists.
history
FreeHand was developed by Altsys in 1988. It was licensed and distributed by Aldus until 1994 . After Aldus merged with Adobe in 1994, all rights went back to Altsys. Shortly thereafter, FreeHand was sold to Macromedia . The software stayed there until the merger with Adobe in 2005.
Some of the FreeHand functions, such as the perspective tool, have now been incorporated into the former competing program Adobe Illustrator . FreeHand can generate many file formats via the export function. The Acrobat products from Adobe are used for secure PDF creation .
FreeHand is used on the Internet because of its high compatibility with the Flash program, which was also developed by Macromedia .
In 2005, Macromedia was taken over by Adobe Systems. FreeHand is not included in the updates for almost all Adobe products that were presented on March 27, 2007. According to Adobe, FreeHand is still supported, but no longer developed. Adobe offers a "Crossgrade" from FreeHand to the Adobe Illustrator CS3 program. Before Adobe took over Macromedia, Illustrator was in direct competition with FreeHand.
Adobe Systems announced on May 16, 2007 in an Adobe blog that "FreeHand MX" will continue to be offered. Adobe Systems will no longer bring a new version of FreeHand onto the market and would like to encourage old FreeHand users to switch to Illustrator through special upgrade offers. Between the CS2 and CS5.1 versions of Illustrator it was also possible to convert files from Freehand to Illustrator. This option was no longer offered with version CS6. Since then, Illustrator no longer offers conversion functions for files from Freehand.
Free FreeHand
In 2009 three professional illustrators founded the organization Free FreeHand in the USA . The organization has set itself the task Freehand through a donation to ransom because Freehand is not developed and the future of FreeHand is very uncertain. The parties also filed a lawsuit against Adobe in the United States. Your accusation is that Adobe has abused its strong market power through its product policy ( planned obsolescence ).
