The Evangelisches Gymnasium Hermannswerder is located on the Hermannswerder peninsula in the southwest of Potsdam .

history

The grammar school was founded in 1908 by Clara Hoffbauer and was a lyceum until the end of the Second World War , before it became a church-sponsored coeducational school in the GDR as the Kirchliches Oberseminar Hermannswerder (KOS) . The affiliated boarding school enabled children from all over the GDR to take their Abitur . In the GDR, however, this only entitle them to study theology or church music at a church university . In the Federal Republic, however, the degree was recognized as a general higher education entrance qualification . Many students from church families who were not admitted to the extended secondary school prepared here for study. In addition to the church senior seminar, there were comparable institutions in Naumburg ( church proseminar ) and in Moritzburg near Dresden (proseminar for church service).

At the time of KOS, the school had around 90 students between the ages of 16 and 20. Most testers graduates from the time of KOS is the former foreign minister of the GDR and former SPD - Bundestag , the incumbent People's League president Markus Meckel .

In March 1990 the degree was recognized throughout Germany as a general higher education entrance qualification for all fields of study. In 1990 the grammar school became the first private school in the area of the former GDR. Since then the school has been expanded from a good 50 students to 710 students (January 2007). A boarding school is affiliated with it with around 60 places in single and double rooms. The main building of the school is part of an ensemble of uniform brick buildings that were built in the neo-Gothic style on the island at the beginning of the 20th century and in the middle of which there has been a church since 1911. The school belongs to the Hoffbauer Foundation , which also brought the Evangelical Gymnasium Kleinmachnow into being.

Educational concept

At the Evangelisches Gymnasium Hermannswerder, religion is a compulsory subject from the beginning class to the Abitur . Regular services in the island church and devotions in the classes are part of school life. However, the school is open to all children regardless of their denominational, religious, social or ethnic origin.

The school is an open all-day school , which means that there is a voluntary afternoon program for the students in addition to the regular subject lessons. The offer of the working groups depends on the interests of the schoolchildren, with a focus on the musical (choir, orchestra, big band, theater, sculpture, painting, film, photography, tailoring, etc.) and sporting (rowing, hockey, handball, volleyball, etc.) field . There are also research clubs in the natural sciences, other foreign language groups, chess and the school zoo, depending on your interests. Thanks to the cooperation with the Hermannswerder parish, the pupils can also attend confirmation classes in the afternoon and receive instrumental lessons through cooperation with a music school .

Pupils who show a special talent in the artistic field or who are characterized by high performance in primary school can apply to the Evangelisches Gymnasium for admission to a performance and talent class with a focus on music. These children come to Hermannswerder after just four years of primary school. In this class, art and music are taught with increased number of hours and sometimes as project work.

The musical offer encompasses all areas of the performing and visual arts: several choirs, a string quartet, a chamber ensemble and a school band, the interdisciplinary theater project of the 8th grade, a theater group and an elective theater course from grade 9, several courses in performing arts, music and art in high school, working groups on film and photography. The choirs give concerts in the island's own church as well as on choir trips and are involved in organizing the services. They are also involved in projects such as the Berlin Cathedral Night.

Church services, festivals, cultural and sporting events are an important part of school life on Hermannswerder.
