Martin Herche

Martin Herche (* 1953 in Wriezen ) is a German Protestant theologian and former general superintendent for the Görlitz district of the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia (EKBO).

Martin Herche grew up as the oldest of eight children of Forster pastor Georg Herche. Maria Nooke is one of his sisters. He passed his Abitur at the Evangelical High School Hermannswerder in Potsdam . He refused military service. He studied Protestant theology at the Language Convict in East Berlin and at the Catechetical College, which later became the Naumburg (Saale) Church University . After the first theological exam he became vicar in Freyburg an der Unstrut. Subsequently he was a tutor and assistant in the subject of church history at the Catechetical College in Naumburg. In 1982 he took over the pastoral position in Heringen / Helme , followed by the pastoral position in Heiligenstadt . He later became superintendent of the Eichsfeld church district in Thuringia. In 2001 Herche was appointed provost of the Halle-Naumburg district, based in Halle (Saale) . In the context of the merger of the Evangelical Church of the Church Province of Saxony and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia to form the Evangelical Church in Central Germany on January 1, 2009, the official title was changed to “Regional Bishop”.

Martin Herche was chairman of the finance committee of his synod for many years and was a member of numerous boards of trustees, including those of the Diakoniewerk Halle and the Francke Foundations . He was also chairman of the Gustav-Adolf-Werk of the Evangelical Church in the ecclesiastical province of Saxony for many years . In 2010 he was appointed to the cathedral chapter of the United Cathedral Donors.

In autumn 2010, the Synod of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia elected him general superintendent for the Görlitz district, which has 206,000 parish members. On January 1, 2011, he took over the post of regional bishop Hans-Wilhelm Pietz and was introduced to his office on January 22, 2011 in the Kreuzkirche in Görlitz by the Berlin bishop Markus Dröge . His term of office ended when he reached retirement age on September 30, 2018. His successor as general superintendent of the district of Görlitz has been Theresa Rinecker since October 1, 2018 .

Martin Herche is married to Pastor Sylvia Herche and has three sons.
