Stephen Wayne "Steve" Bedrosian , nicknamed Bedrock , (born December 6, 1957 in Methuen , Massachusetts ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) as pitcher of Armenian descent. In 1987 he won the Cy Young Award of the National League (NL). With the Minnesota Twins he won the 1991 World Series .
Bedrosian's son Cameron was selected in the 2010 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and has also played in the MLB since 2014.
Career
Bedrosian attended the University of New Haven and played baseball there. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1978 . In 1981 he made his MLB debut on August 14 at the age of 23 against the Los Angeles Dodgers . In the game, Bredosian pitched 2 ⁄ 3 innings . The game lost the Braves 0-5. The 1985 season was the only season in which the right-hander only played as a starting pitcher . This year he had seven wins , 15 losses and set the record for the most games started without pitching a complete game.
Bedrosian was swapped with Milt Thompson from the Braves to the Philadelphia Phillies for Pete Smith and Ozzie Virgil on December 10, 1985 and retrained by the Phillies to a relief pitcher . In his first year as a relief pitcher, he had 29 saves . 1987 would be his best year as a baseball player in the MLB. This season he had five wins, three losses with an earned run average of 2.83. With 40 saves he also led the MLB in these statistics. Because of these achievements, he was given the NL Cy Young Award and was elected to the NL All-Star Team .
On June 18, 1989, he moved to the San Francisco Giants . With the Minnesota Twins he won the 1991 World Series . On August 9, 1995, he made his last game in the MLB. In this game he pitched 1 / 3 innings. The Giants lost the game 3 to 9 against Cincinnati Reds .
