Peter John "Pete" Smith (born February 27, 1966 in Abington , Massachusetts ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the position of pitcher .

Career

Smith was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the first round of the 1984 MLB Draft . From 1984 to 1985, Smith played on the Phillies' minor league teams before joining the Atlanta Braves with Ozzie Virgil, Jr. for Steve Bedrosian and Milt Thompson . In 1986, Smith played in the Southern League for the Greenville Braves.

Smith made his MLB debut on September 8, 1987 at the age of 21 against the San Diego Padres . In the game, Smith pitched 8 23 innings , allowing only six hits and two runs . The game was won by the Braves 4 to 2. In 1988 Smith started 32 games, finished five of them and threw three shutouts , with an Earned Run Average (ERA) of 3.69. In the seasons from 1989 to 1991 Smith could not build on his performance from 1988. His ERA rose from 4.75 in 1989 to 5.06 in 1991. In 1992, he was again a good year and a ERA of 2.05 seven won and not lost the game, but the Braves traded him on 24 November 1993 against Dave Gallagher to the New York Mets .

Smith couldn't convince with the Mets either. He pitched 21 games in the 1994 season but only won four and lost ten, with an ERA of 5.55. At the end of the season, Smith became a free agent and signed a contract with the Cincinnati Reds . For the Reds, however, he only played half a season and switched to the Florida Marlins on June 27, 1995 . The rest of 1995 he spent in the Triple-A with the Charlotte Knights from the International League .

In 1997 he returned to the MLB wearing the San Diego Padres jersey and pitched 37 games for the franchise . In 1998 he moved to the Baltimore Orioles in the current season and made his last game as a professional for the team on September 24, 1998 against the Boston Red Sox . In the game, Smith pitched 1 23 innings, allowing two hits and one run.

His career stats show an ERA of 4.55, 640 strikeouts and four shutouts in 1025 23 innings.
