Ferguson "Fergie" Arthur Jenkins (born December 13, 1942 in Chatham , Ontario , Canada ) is a retired Canadian baseball player in Major League Baseball . His nickname was Fly .
biography
Jenkins was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1963 draft . The right-handed pitcher made his debut in the National League on September 10, 1965. The next year he was transferred from the Phillies to the Chicago Cubs , where he spent his strongest years in baseball.
From 1967 to 1972, Jenkins won at least 20 games each season wearing the Cubs' shirt. In 1971 he achieved an ERA of 2.77, won 24 games in 13 losses, played 30 full games and won the National League's Cy Young Award . In 1967 and 1971 he also took part in the All-Star game and had to give up a home run every time . After he had not won 20 games in 1973, he was transferred from the Cubs to the Texas Rangers . He won 25 games in his first year in Texas, the last season he managed to beat that mark. He became the first baseball player that year to win the Lou Marsh Trophy for the best Canadian athlete.
After the Rangers, he moved to the Boston Red Sox , from there again to the Rangers and the Cubs. His last game in the National League he played on September 26, 1983. He ended his career with 284 wins and 3,192 strikeouts. In 1987 he was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame , and in 1991 he became the first Canadian to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown .
