biography
Perry began his career as a professional baseball player on the minor league teams of the San Francisco Giants . In 1963 he was able to fight for a place in the major league team of the Giants. Here he stood in the shadow of Juan Marichal for a long time . It wasn't until 1966 that Perry first came into the spotlight. By August he had an unbelievable record of 20 wins with only 2 defeats, which however deteriorated to 21-8 by the end of the season. On September 17, 1968, he threw a no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals . Curiously, Ray Washburn of the Cardinals did the same feat the next day. In total, Perry won 134 games for the Giants before moving to the Cleveland Indians in 1972 . There he won 24 games in his first season and also the Cy Young Award of the American League . By winning the National League Cy Young Award in 1978 with the San Diego Padres , Perry was the first to win this award in both leagues.
On May 6, 1982 Perry won his 300th game with the Seattle Mariners and thus reached this milestone as the 15th pitcher in the Major League since Early Wynn had crossed this mark as the 14th player in 1963. Along with Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan , he also outperformed Walter Johnson , who had led the Major League for years with 3509 strikeouts.
Despite his alleged predilection for unauthorized throws such as the Spitball (ironically, he titled his autobiography Me and the Spitter ), he was never sent off until 1983. In 1991 Perry was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame . Since July 23, 2005, the San Francisco Giants no longer award his jersey number 36.
