Dennis Lee Eckersley (born October 3, 1954 in Oakland , California ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball . His nickname is Eck .

biography

Dennis Eckersley made his American League debut with the Cleveland Indians on April 12, 1975 as a starting pitcher . In his first year he got off to a good start, recording thirteen wins out of seven losses. In the election for Rookie of the Year, he was defeated by Fred Lynn of the Boston Red Sox . On May 30, 1977, he threw a no-hitter against the California Angels .

In 1978 he moved to the Boston Red Sox . This year he had the best record of his career with a record of twenty wins, eight losses and an ERA of 2.99. In 1979 he was able to win seventeen games, but then lost class and consistency. After four average seasons he was transferred to the Chicago Cubs . He helped them back into the play-offs in 1984 for the first time since 1945. Here, however, the Cubs were subject to the San Diego Padres in the National League Championship Series. In the next two years he then had to struggle with athletic and personal problems. He lost control of his fastball in baseball and only performed below average. In his private life he struggled with alcohol problems. After the 1986 season, he went to a rehabilitation clinic because of these problems.

From the Cubs he then moved to the Oakland Athletics in his hometown. A's manager Tony LaRussa planned to use Eckersley as a long substitute thrower for the middle innings. After an injury to the regular closer Jay Howell Eckersley took over his duties in the last innings and surprised and convinced with his performances in this position. After that he shouldn't give up this role in his time with the A's. From 1988 to 1990 he reached the World Series with his team , but there was only one victory in 1989 in the series shaken by the earthquake against local rivals San Francisco Giants . Eckersley had his best year in the Oakland Athletics jersey in 1992. He achieved 51 saves and won both the Cy Young Award of the American League and the title of MVP . After Eckersley, no pitcher received this award.

After his time in Oakland, he moved to the St. Louis Cardinals . He ended his career on September 26, 1998 wearing the Boston Red Sox jersey. In 2004 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame . Since August 13, 2005, his jersey number 43 is no longer awarded by the Athletics. He currently works as a television analyst for the Boston Red Sox.
