The American League Division Series 2010 (ALDS) took place between October 6 and 12, 2010 and was part of the post season of the 2010 MLB season . It was used to determine which two teams will compete against each other in the 2010 American League Championship Series . There were two best-of-five series in which the winners of the three divisions of the American League and a wildcard team took part. The pairings were:

The Twins and Yankees met for the fourth time overall and for the second time in a row in the ALDS; the Yankees have won all previous series (2003, 2004 and 2009) and retained the upper hand in 2010 with their 3-0 victory ("sweep").

The Rays and Rangers had not yet played against each other in the postseason. For the Rays it was only the second participation in an ALDS after 2008; the Rangers were last in 1999 in the ALDS and participated for the fourth time. They beat the Rays 3-2. It was the first postseason series in the history of the MLB in which all games were won by the away team.

In the second game, too, the Rays were unable to counter the Rangers' strong starting pitching or offensive. A hit by pitch allowed Matt Treanor to walk to first base in the third inning and give him a run when James Shields failed in an attempt to knock out the runner at first. A solo home run by Ian Kinsler in the fourth inning increased the result to 2-0. In the top half of the fifth inning, on one out and with Julio Borbon on first base, Elvis hit Andrus a single. Shields was then replaced by Chad Qualls. After a controversial check-swing decision, Michael Young hit a three-run home run. After Rays manager Joe Madden complained to the umpire about Young swinging through the 2-2 pitch, he was kicked out of the game. A single from Ian Kinsler in the sixth inning brought home the sixth run. The Rays had their best chance in the seventh inning. After a walk by Ben Zobrist and a subsequent double by Willy Aybar, Kelly Shoppach and Matt Joyce failed with strikeouts and Jason Bartlett ended the inning with a fly ball into centerfield.

CJ Wilson threw 6⅓ innings without a run, had only two hits, scored seven strikeouts and only allowed two walks.

After two away wins, the Rangers hoped to move into the ALCS in the third game at their home stadium. In fact, they managed to get the first run in the third inning: Mitch Moreland hit a double and reached third base as a result of a passed ball. A groundout from Elvis Andrus was enough to bring Moreland home. The Rays equalized in the sixth inning: First, Colby Lewis allowed Evan Longoria to walk and was replaced by relief pitcher Derek Holland. He reached a ground ball to second base against Matt Joyce, which led to Longoria force out. Joyce reached first base, however. A subsequent single from Dan Johnson brought Joyce to second base, but suffered a day out while trying to reach third base. After a walk for Carlos Peña , Holland was taken out of the game and replaced by Alexi Ogando. He allowed a double from BJ Upton, through which Johnson was able to achieve the first run for the Rays.

The Rangers hit back in the seventh inning with a solo home run from Ian Kinsler, who also ended the game for Matt Garza as the Rays starting pitcher. In the eighth inning, Johnson hit a double and was replaced by Desmond Jennings as pinch runner, who equalized after a single from Peña. A John Jaso double brought Peña home and the Rays' first-time lead in the series. A solo home run by Carl Crawford early in the ninth inning and a home run by Peña brought three more runs for the Rays. Although Rafael Soriano allowed a home run by Nelson Cruz in the ninth inning, the Rangers were unable to achieve further runs.

In the fourth game, the Rays took the lead in the second inning after a triple from Carlos Peña and an error from Ian Kinsler. Two consecutive doubles in the fourth inning for Evan Longoria and Peña gave the Rays the second run. Three more were added in the fifth inning with a home run by Longoria. The Rangers came on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with a home run by Nelson Cruz. Another run by Ian Kinsler after a double from Mitch Moreland brought the final score of 5-2.

The Rays' second away win led to the equalizer in the series. It was the first time since 2005 that five games have been played in a Division Series. A win would make the Rays the second team after the New York Yankees to still win the ALDS, although they were already 0-2 behind after two games. If Rangers win, it would be the first postseason series in MLB history in which all games were won by the away team.

Game 5, October 12, 2010

Cliff Lee, successful starting pitcher for the Rangers in games 1 and 5.

WP : Cliff Lee (2–0)   LP : David Price (0–2)

HRs :   TEX - Ian Kinsler (3)

In the last game of the series, as in Game 1, the best pitchers of the two teams faced each other: Cliff Lee for the Texas Rangers and David Price for the Tampa Bay Rays. Elvis Andrus scored the first run for the Rangers: After a single as lead-off hitter in the first inning, he stole second base, so a groundout from Josh Hamilton was enough to bring Andrus home. A run by Sean Rodriguez equalized in the third inning. However, the Rangers were able to restore the lead in the fourth inning: After a double into the right field, which almost became a home run, Nelson Cruz stole third base and reached the home plate after an error by catcher Kelly Shoppach. In the sixth inning, the Rangers were able to extend their lead with a run by Vladimir Guerrero. In an attempted double play , Price waited at first base for the umpire's decision , while Guerrero ran from second base towards Homeplate and reached it just before Price was thrown. Price was replaced by Grant Balfour in the seventh inning. The last two runs reached Ian Kinsler in the ninth inning with a home run against closer Rafael Soriano. Cliff Lee stayed on the mound in the final inning. His strong performance (only one run with six hits and eleven strikeouts) secured the Rays the victory of the ALDS 2010 and made it the first postseason series in which the away team could win all games. It was the first time the Rangers had won a series in the postseason.

The Twins began the game hoping to finally end the long run of postseason losses to the Yankees. In the second half of the second inning, CC Sabathia , Yankees' starting pitcher, met Jim Thome . He then allowed Michael Cuddyer a home run, so it was 0-2 for the Twins. A passed ball from Jorge Posada brought Orlando Hudson home and extended the Twins' lead to three runs in the third inning. Francisco Liriano was able to prevent the Yankees from running until the sixth inning. However, singles from Robinson Canó and Jorge Posada led to two runs and a triple from Curtis Granderson brought Canó and Posada home and the Yankees the lead 4-3. However, by the second half of that inning, the Twins managed to load the bases. A walk by Danny Valancia brought the Twins the fourth run and equalized. But in the following seventh inning, the Yankees took the lead back with a home run from Mark Teixeira , who made two runs. With four outs in the eighth and ninth inning, Mariano Rivera scored his 40th save in the postseason and secured victory for the Yankees.

In the second game Carl Pavano, who could win 17 games in the regular season, was on the mound for the Twins. Andy Pettitte started for the Yankees . As in the first game, the Twins were able to score the first run of the game in the second inning with a sacrifice fly from Danny Valencia. The Yankees only managed to equalize in the fourth inning after Curtis Granderson hit a double, came to third base through a single from Mark Teixeira and then came to the home plate through a sacrifice fly from Alex Rodríguez . In the fifth inning, a home run by Designated Hitter Lance Berkman put the Yankees in the lead with a run. However, a solo home run by Orlando Hudson equalized the Twins in the second half of the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, a Berkman double brought the Yankees back into the lead. Previously, the Twins' manager, Ron Gardenhire, had been kicked out of the game after complaining to the umpire about a failed strike . The next pitch brought Berkman's double and the fifth run for the Yankees. A single from Derek Jeter in the same inning brought Berkman home and the score to 4-2 for the Yankees. In the first half of the ninth inning, an RBI single from Curtis Grandson brought the fifth and final run of the game. At the beginning of the second half of the ninth inning, Mariano Rivera allowed a single from Joe Maurer, but then Delmon Young beat in a double play . A fly ball from Jim Thome ended the game.

For Andy Pettitte it was the 19th win in the postseason, for Mariano Rivera the 41st save in the postseason - both records. For the Twins, it was the eleventh post-season loss overall and the eighth in a row against the Yankees.

Game 3, October 9, 2010

new York 0 1 1 3 0 0 1 0 - 6th 12 0

WP : Phil Hughes (1–0)   LP : Brian Duensing (0–1)

For the first time in the ALDS, the Yankees were able to take the lead first: Robinson Canó scored the first run in the second half of the second inning after a triple and an RBI single from Jorge Posada . In the third inning Nick Swisher followed up with a double and a subsequent RBI single from Mark Teixeira and increased the score to 2-0. In the fourth inning, Canó was on first base after a single when Marcus Thames hit a homerun on the first pitch and extended the lead of the Yankees to 4 runs. Brian Duensing then scored the first out of this inning with a strikeout from Posada; the next batter, Curtis Granderson , however, allowed a walk and was substituted for Matt Guerrier. With Brett Gardner as the next batter, Granderson stole second base; Joe Mauer's attempt to prevent this failed because of the bad throw to second base, so Granderson was able to reach third base due to this error. A Sac Fly from Gardner brought Granderson home. The final and sixth runs for the Yankees came early in the seventh inning through a solo home run by Nick Swisher.

The Twins could only score when Phil Hughes left the mound after seven innings in which he only allowed four hits and one walk and reached six strikeouts. Against relief pitcher Kerry Wood , Danny Valencia hit a double right at the beginning of the eighth inning. Two more singles followed so that the bases were loaded. A subsequent walk for Joe Mauer gave the Twins the only run of the day and ended Wood's performance. He was replaced by Bone Logan, who scored the first out of the inning with a single pitch and was then replaced by David Robertson . With loaded bases behind Robertson was able to achieve the two necessary outs to end the inning. In the ninth inning, the Twins had no chance against Mariano Rivera and thus lost the third game in a row and at the same time the ALDS 2010.

It was the first time the Yankees had reached the American League Championship Series as a wildcard team. In 1995, 1997 and 2007, however, they failed. It was the ninth time since 1995 that the Yankees have made the Championship Series - an MLB record.
