Marcus Markley Thames [ ˈtɪmz ] (born March 6, 1977 in Louisville , Mississippi ) is a retired American baseball player in the major league . His last club were the Los Angeles Dodgers .

Career

New York Yankees

After college in Decatur , Mississippi, Thames was elected in the 1996 MLB Draft in the 30th round by the New York Yankees and initially played in the Yankees' farm system . His best season in the minor leagues was 2001 with the AA team Norwich Navigators with a batting average of .321 on 31 home runs and 97 RBIs. Because of his achievements, he was named to the Minor League All-Star Team that year.

On June 10, 2002, Thames made his major league debut and hit a home run on the first pitch of Randy Johnson ( Arizona Diamondbacks ) in his first at-bat . Nevertheless, his time in the MLB was initially short-lived, as he was sent back to the triple-A team Columbus Clippers by the Yankees on June 27, 2003. It was there that he started the 2003 season.

Texas Rangers

In June 2003 he was transferred from the Yankees to the Texas Rangers , who also used him in their Triple-A team. At the end of the season he became a free agent and signed a contract with the Detroit Tigers in December 2003 .

Detroit Tigers

With the Tigers, Thames played alternately in the MLB and the triple-A team Toledo Mud Hens in the following two years. 2006 was only part of the Tigers' roster at the beginning of the season. He was only used sporadically at first, but received more playing time after injuries to other outfielders. At the end of the season there was a batting average of .256 with 26 home runs and 60 RBIs in just 348 at-bats. From 2007, Thames was also used by the Tigers on first base and was therefore able to start in more games, especially against left-handed pitchers. In 2008, he was able to hit a home run in six consecutive games in June - an achievement that had only been achieved by four other players (Rudy York, Hank Greenberg, Vic Wertz and Willie Horton). Plus, each of his eight hits was a home run in ten consecutive games. For the 2009 season, Thames signed a one-year contract with the Tigers and played as an outfielder and designated hitter . On August 9, 2009 he hit the 100th home run of his career. At the end of the season, the Tigers turned down a contract extension.

New York Yankees

In February 2010, Thames signed a contract for the Minor Leagues with the New York Yankees .; but was added to the Yankees' roster. In the regular season he was used in 82 games, mostly against left-handed pitchers. He hit 12 home runs and had a batting average of .288. Thames hits were decisive in several games: on May 17, he hit a walk-off home run against the Boston Red Sox and on July 4, a single ended the game against the Toronto Blue Jays in favor of the Yankees. Between August 24 and 30, he hit six home runs with 11 RBIs in 23 at-bats.

Los Angeles Dodgers

In January 2011, Thames signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers for $ 1 million.

Private life

Thames is married and has two daughters: Deja (born 1997) and Jade (born 2007).
