William Lance Berkman (born February 10, 1976 in Waco , Texas ) is a retired American baseball player in the major league . After more than ten years with the Houston Astros , he played briefly with the New York Yankees on the St. Louis Cardinals team . The last club he played for were the Texas Rangers . He has played in his career as a first baseman , designated hitter and as an outfielder .

Career

Berkman played on the college team at Rice University and was selected by the Houston Astros in the 1997 MLB Draft in the first round as the 16th player ever. After two years in the minor leagues , he made his major league debut in 1999. Although he had played as a first baseman until then, he was used in the Astros in the outfield. In 2001, he finished fourth in the National League with a batting average of .311 . This year he was elected to the NL All-Star Team for the first time . In 2005 he signed a six-year contract for $ 85 million with the Astros. After an injury to Jeff Bagwell, he moved to first base. On June 13, 2009, he hit his 300th home run.

On July 31, 2010, Berkman was transferred from the Astros to the New York Yankees, where he was mainly used as a designated hitter. After the end of the season, the Yankees did not take an option to extend the contract. On December 4, 2010, Berkman signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals for $ 8 million .

Private life

Berkman has four children with his wife Cara: Hannah Leigh, Carly Anne, Katie Mae and Abigail Primm.
