The 2011 American League Division Series (ALDS) in baseball took place between September 30 and October 6, 2011 and was part of the postseason of the 2011 MLB season . It was used to determine which two teams will compete against each other in the 2011 American League Championship Series . There were two best-of-five series in which the winners of the three divisions of the American League and a wildcard team took part. The pairings were:

  • New York Yankees (Eastern Division winner, 97-65) versus Detroit Tigers (Central Division winner, 95-67). The Yankees and Tigers met for the second time after Detroit won 3-1 in 2006.
  • Texas Rangers (West Division winners, 96-66) versus Tampa Bay Rays (wildcard team, 91-71). The Rays and Rangers met for the second time in a row in the ALDS. The year before, the Rangers had prevailed 3-2.

The Rays surprised with their decision to use the inexperienced pitcher Matt Moore as a starter for the second time ever. But he showed a strong performance for seven innings, allowing only two hits and scoring six strike-outs. The guests from Tampa Bay were unstoppable while batting. After a two-run home run by Johnny Damon in the second inning, catcher Kelly Shoppach, who harmonized very well with Moore, ensured the reassuring and ultimately decisive 8-0 lead with two home runs with a total of 5 RBIs . The only two hits for the Rangers came from Josh Hamilton , whose dazzling career began in 1999 in the Rays franchise system.
