Joshua "Josh" Holt Hamilton (born May 21, 1981 in Raleigh , North Carolina ) is a retired American baseball player . From 2008 to 2012 and 2015 he played as an outfielder with the Texas Rangers in Major League Baseball . In the 2013-2014 seasons he was active for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim .

Career

Onset and drug problems

Hamilton was elected in the 1999 MLB Draft in the first round as the first player ever by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays . After signing the contract, he received a bonus of $ 3.96 million. He played in the Devil Rays' farm system for two years before injuries and drug addiction in particular nearly ended his career in 2001. In 2001 he only played 45 games, in 2002 in 56. At the beginning of the 2003 season he only took part in his team's training sporadically and then took the rest of the season off for personal reasons. Participation in Spring Training 2004 was prevented by a suspension that Hamilton received because of a positive drug test. After further drug incidents, the suspension was extended several times. Hamilton did not play baseball between 2004 and 2006.

New start in 2006 and 2007

It was not until June 2006 that the MLB allowed Hamilton to train with the minor league players of the Devil Rays. At the end of June 2006 he received a license to play in the minor leagues.

Since Hamilton was not part of the 40-man roster of the Devil Rays, he was elected in the 2006 Rule 5 Draft by the Chicago Cubs , who immediately transferred him to the Cincinnati Reds . There he was accepted into the 25-man roster after good performances in spring training and made his debut in the MLB on April 2, 2007. After the end of the season, the Reds transferred Hamilton to the Texas Rangers .

Texas Rangers

Since 2008

After a very good spring training session, Hamilton got a place on the starting grid as an outfielder with the Rangers. For his achievements during the season he was named AL Player of the Month in April and May 2007. His good performances continued and he was selected to the AL All-Star Team . In 2009 he was re-elected to the All-Star Team despite an injury.

In the 2010 season , Hamilton was appointed to the AL and again to the All-Star Team with a batting average of .359 Batting Champion. For his very good performance during the regular season he was awarded the Most Valuable Player Award of the AL. In the postseason he played in the 2010 ALCS against the New York Yankees and received the Most Valuable Player Award. For his offensive performance throughout the season in the outfield, he was awarded a Silver Slugger Award for the second time . He also won the Sporting News Player of the Year Award , given to the best player in the entire MLB by 326 Major League players.

2012

After Hamilton lost to the Texas Rangers in the World Series again in the preseason, there was another alcohol incident at the beginning of 2012. Hamilton publicly apologized for this in a press conference and was therefore not banned from the league.

After some moderate jumping training, Hamilton got his team off to a very good start in the regular season. He was named American League Player of the Month in April and May. On May 8, 2012, Hamilton hit four home runs in a single game in the game at the Baltimore Orioles. He was only the 16th player in the more than 140-year history of the MLB to achieve this feat. Hamilton was reelected to the American League All-Star Team this season. It received 11,073,744 votes in the election, the highest number of any player in the history of the Allstar game. Nevertheless, the season came to a rather sober end for Hamilton. His 43 home runs were the second best performance of the 2012 season, but the Texas Rangers could not qualify for the AL Division Series after two World Series defeats in previous years this year. On June 30th they still had 13 games ahead of the second of the AL West. Six games before the end of the season, it was still four games ahead. Nevertheless, the Oakland Athletics pulled past the Rangers on the final day of the game. Texas then lost the wild card game against the Baltimore Orioles 5-1. After this collapse, harsh individual criticisms were made of Hamilton in particular. In the crucial phase of the season, he missed a number of games due to self-inflicted eye or vision problems, which were apparently caused by his above-average consumption of energy drinks. He also dropped a routine flyball on the crucial final day of the game, resulting in a run for the Oakland Athletics. That moment was seen as a game-changing twist in retrospect. Shortly after the end of the season, the Texas Rangers and Josh Hamilton agreed that he would first look around the market before the Rangers would make a new contract offer.

Los Angeles Angels

After Hamilton's contract with the Texas Rangers expired, it was officially announced on December 15, 2012 that the Los Angeles Angels and Josh Hamilton had agreed on a new 5-year deal worth US $ 125 million.

Hamilton played for the Los Angeles Angels for two years. In February 2015, Hamilton underwent shoulder surgery. During his recovery period, it was revealed that he had relapsed into drug addiction, which he voluntarily reported to the MLB . Based on this voluntary disclosure, an external expert decided that Josh Hamilton had not violated the drug and doping guidelines of the MLB and should therefore not be banned. Even so, Arte Moreno , owner of the Los Angeles Angels, indicated in conversations with journalists that Hamilton would no longer play for the Angels. Furthermore, all products that bore Hamilton's name were removed from the fan shop. Although the players' union and some teammates defended Hamilton, it was announced that the Angels wanted to transfer Hamilton.

Texas Rangers

2015

Josh Hamilton moved back to the Texas Rangers at the beginning of the 2015 season . After a short build-up phase with the Minor League teams of the Texas Rangers, Hamilton returned to the starting line-up of the Rangers on May 25 and reached the playoffs with them.

End of career

Josh Hamilton started the 2016 season on the Disabled List . Shortly after the start of the season, it was announced that he would miss the entire season with knee surgery. The following year there were considerations to use Hamilton as first baseman . After further injuries and operations on both knees, the Rangers released Hamilton. Whereupon he ended his career.

Private life

Hamilton has been married since 2004 and has two daughters with his wife Katie.
