The 2010 American League Championship Series (ALCS) took place between October 15 and October 22, 2010. In it, the winner came 2010 American League Division Series , Texas Rangers (winning the Western Division) and the New York Yankees to the winner of the (wild card team) against each other, American League and its representative in the 2010 World Series to determine . The Texas Rangers won with 4 - 2 wins. Josh Hamilton (Rangers) was recognized as the most valuable player .

Mode and participants

It is a best-of-seven series with the Rangers Homefield Advantage. The Yankees have won more games than the Rangers (95-67 versus 90-72) in the regular season and therefore have a home advantage. However, you are not a division winner, but only take part in the postseason as a wildcard team. This team is never entitled to home advantage. Therefore, Games 1 and 2 were played at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington , while Games 3, 4 and 5 were played at Yankee Stadium . Game 6 and a possibly decisive game 7 are played again in the Rangers Ballpark.

The Rangers could only qualify three times before for the postseason and failed each time at the Yankees in the ALDS of 1996, 1998 and 1999; in particular, they could only win one of the ten games so far. For Texas, after winning the 2010 ALDS over the Tampa Bay Rays, it is the first time that they are qualified for the ALCS, while the Yankees have competed for the 14th time since 1969 and only twice failed to win the series.

In Game 1, the Yankees once again managed to convert an almost lost game into a win: Although they were behind with 0-5 at the end of the sixth inning, New York could still win the game with 6-5. In the regular season they were able to win 48 times after falling behind.

New York starter CC Sabathia had considerable difficulties after an eight-day break (last start: Game 1 of the ALDS 2010 on October 6, 2010). In the first inning he allowed lead-off hitter Elvis Andrus to walk and a single from Michael Young. The third batter of the inning, Josh Hamilton , then gave the Rangers a 0-3 lead with a home run. Texas extended their lead in the fourth inning with a double from Michael Young that brought home two runs. Sabathia was replaced in the fifth inning by Joba Chamberlain , who no longer allowed a run. Also held Dustin Moseley , who came to the mound for Chamberlain in the sixth inning, the backlog in five runs.

By the end of the sixth inning, CJ Wilson was able to prevent a run by the Yankees. At the start of the seventh inning, he then allowed a solo home run for the first battler, Robinson Canó . Wilson also started the eighth inning, but immediately gave a hit to the fast Brett Gardner , who just barely beat the throw to first base. A subsequent double from Derek Jeter brought Gardner home and ended the game for Wilson, who was replaced by Darren Oliver. Oliver allowed Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira to do two walks , thus loading the bases. He was substituted for Darren O'Day, on whose first pitch Alex Rodríguez hit a single, which Jeter and Swisher were able to shorten the gap to 4-5. The Rangers brought in as new pitcher Clay Rapada, who released a single from Canó, through which Teixeira equalized the Yankees. With Derek Holland the fifth pitcher was used in this inning. A single from Marcus Thames gave the lead and the final score of 6-5. Kerry Wood in the eighth inning and Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning did not allow the Rangers to run again.

For Rivera it was the 42nd save in the postseason and the 13th in a League Championship Series - both records. For the Rangers, it was the tenth loss in a postseason game against the Yankees in a row - a series that began in 1996. It was also the seventh consecutive postseason game lost in the home stadium.

Game 2 was in some ways similar to Game 1, with the crucial difference that the Rangers managed to hold a five-run lead and win the game. Once again, the starting pitcher of the Yankees, this time Phil Hughes , allowed the Rangers to run several runs in the first innings and was taken out of the game after only four innings. Previously, Elvis Andrus was able to achieve the first run for the Rangers in the first inning after two stolen bases . A solo home run by David Murphy and three consecutive hits by Mitch Moreland, Elvis Andrus and Michael Young put the Rangers in the lead with three runs. In the third inning Nelson Cruz hit a double and reached third base after a sacrifice Bunt by Ian Kinsler. Two doubles from David Murphy and Bengie Molina brought runs 4 and 5 for the Rangers.

The Yankees made their first run in the fourth inning after a double from Robinson Cano , a wild pitch from Colby Lewis and a single from Lance Berkman . At the beginning of the fifth inning, the Rangers were able to extend their lead with a double from Nelson Cruz and an RBI triple from Ian Kinsler. This ended the game for Phil Hughes, who was replaced by Joba Chamberlain . Chamberlain reached two strikeouts, but then allowed a single from Mitch Moreland, through which Kinsler scored the seventh run. The Yankees could only book one more run with a home run by Robinson Canó in the sixth inning.

For the Rangers it was the first home win in a postseason game. At the same time they were able to end a ten-game series of postseason losses to the Yankees.

The story of Game 3 is briefly told: Over eight innings, Cliff Lee was able to prove his phenomenal postseason skills again and did not allow the Yankees to run at 13 strikeouts. His counterpart Andy Pettitte also showed a good performance with only two runs in seven innings. His bad luck was that he allowed a single by Michael Young in the first inning and then gave up Josh Hamilton a home run to lead the Rangers 2-0.

As a result, the Yankees could not find a remedy against Lee, while now the Rangers with the lead behind them waited for the Yankees' next mistake. This came after Pettite's replacement and an uneventful inning from Kerry Wood , until in the 9th inning the entire lineup of Rangers came to blow and scored six runs against the Yankees' bullpen. Several times the bases were full, and again and again a Rangers player could find a hole in the defense.

With this now more than comfortable lead of 8-0, Naftali Feliz was able to close the door to the Rangers' second victory in their first ALCS participation without much thrill in the home half of the ninth inning, what the previous low successes against the Yankees in the past faded accordingly.

With the 10-3 success in Game 4, the Rangers are only one victory away from their first entry into the World Series. By the sixth inning, the Yankees and Rangers played an even game in which the lead changed several times. In the second inning, the Yankees were able to take the lead for the first time in this series with a home run by Robinson Canó . The Rangers hit back in the third inning with two runs through David Murphy and Bengie Molina . A triple from Derek Jeter and a subsequent single from Curtis Granderson equalized in the second half of the inning. In the fourth inning, the Yankees again took the lead with a run from Alex Rodríguez .

The tide turned in the Rangers' favor in the sixth inning after Nelson Cruz reached first base by a fielder's choice and then stole second base. Joe Girardi, the manager of the Yankees, decided to let David Murphy, who hit from the left, with an intentional walk on first base in order to achieve the next out against Bengie Molina, who hit from the right. However, on AJ Burnett's first pitch , Molina hit a home run that put the Rangers 5-3 ahead. The Yankees' hopes of fighting back were tarnished in the seventh inning by two more runs by the Rangers: Boone Logan made a home run from Josh Hamilton and Joba Chamberlain allowed another run from Vladimir Guerrero. In the eighth inning, the Yankees managed to load the bases through three consecutive walks; but they couldn't bring any of their baserunners home. The Rangers followed suit in the ninth guild with two home runs from Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz, which brought in three runs, and the Yankees took away any hope of victory. The Yankees also lost First Baseman Mark Teixeira , who pulled a hamstring muscle and is out for the rest of the postseason.

Game 5

With their pitching ace CC Sabathia on the mound, the Yankees took the lead in the second inning after two walks by Alex Rodríguez and Lance Berkman and a single by Jorge Posada . Another single from Curtis Granderson brought the second run, an error from Jeff Francoeur the third run for the Yankees. Home runs by Nick Swisher and Robinson Canó in the third inning extended the lead to 5-0.

The Rangers came on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with a home run by Matt Treanor . The Yankees hit back in the same inning with a run from Nick Swisher. Three singles from David Murphy , Ian Kinsler and Jeff Francoeur in the sixth inning loaded the bases. A single from Treanor brought the second run for the Rangers, but they could not make any further profit from the situation.

Sabathia was replaced in the seventh inning by Kerry Wood , who did not allow a run in two innings. Mariano Rivera secured the win in the ninth inning that keeps the Yankees in the series.

Game 6

With the victory in the sixth game, the Rangers made their first entry into the World Series. The game was reminiscent of game 2: Not only were the location and the pair of starting pitchers the same, the course of the game and the general conditions were similar. After a defeat in the previous game, the Rangers were able to bring Phil Hughes , the starter of the Yankees, behind early and force his substitution before the end of the fifth inning.
