Nicholas "Nick" Thompson Swisher , nickname Swish , (born November 25, 1980 in Columbus , Ohio ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the positions of right fielder and first baseman .

Career

college

Since Swisher was not selected in the MLB Draft after graduating from high school , he opted for college and played baseball for the Ohio State University team , the Ohio State Buckeyes. In 2000, he had a batting average of .299, 10 home runs and 48 RBI and was named Big 10 Freshman of the Year. After two more good seasons, Swisher was selected in the first round of the 2002 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics .

Minor league

In the minor league Swisher played in the farm system of the A's for the Visilia Oaks, Vancouver Canadians, Modesto A's, Midland RockHounds and Sacramento River Cats. In 2004, his batting average was .263 on 29 home runs and 92 RBI.

Oakland Athletics

On September 3, 2004, Swisher was appointed to the Oakland Athletics team. In 20 games of the remaining season, he hit .250, two home runs and eight RBI. In 2005 he played with the A's for most of the season and was voted sixth in the MLB Rookie of the Year Award . In 2006, Swisher played about half of his games in left field and the other half on first base. His batting average was .254 with 35 home runs and 95 RBI. In 2007, his batting average improved again to .262 on 22 home runs and 78 RBI.

Chicago White Sox

On January 3, 2008, Swisher was transferred to the Chicago White Sox . Here, however, he could not build on his good offensive performance and achieved a batting average of only .219. In September 2008 he was therefore mostly no longer used by White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen .

New York Yankees

On November 13, 2008, Swisher was transferred from the White Sox to the New York Yankees . The Yankees intended to use Swisher as first baseman. However, after first baseman Mark Teixeira was signed, Yankees manager Joe Girardi decided at the end of spring training that Swisher should only be used as a player on the bench, while Xavier Nady should occupy the position in right field. On April 9, 2009 Swisher played for the first time from the beginning in the right field, since Nady was used in this game as a designated hitter . After Nady sustained an elbow injury on April 14, 2009, which ended his season, Swisher became a regular right fielder for the Yankees. He hit 29 home runs in 2009 , scored 82 RBI and a batting average of .249.

In the 2010 season , Swisher plays as a regular in Right Field. At the beginning of July 2010 he was the last player to be voted into the All-Star Team 2010 by the fans .

Cleveland Indians

On December 23, 2012, Nick Swisher signed a 4-year contract with the Cleveland Indians for $ 56 million . The move became official on January 3, 2013.

Private life

Swisher is the son of former Major League catcher Steve Swisher , who played for various National League clubs in the 1970s and 1980s . Nick Swisher grew up in Parkersburg , West Virginia .

Swisher has been married to the actress Joanna García since December 11, 2010 , who u. a. in the television series Gossip Girl . In February 2010, he made a guest appearance on the television series How I Met Your Mother .
