Brett M. Gardner (* 24. August 1983 in Holly Hill , South Carolina ) is an American baseball player in Major League . He plays there for the New York Yankees .

biography

Gardner began his baseball career in 2001 with the College of Charleston Cougars, the baseball team at the College of Charleston in Charleston , South Carolina. In the third round of the 2005 MLB Draft , he was elected by the New York Yankees. In the 2005 season he played with the Staten Island Yankees in the New York Penn League. In 2006 he was with the Tampa Yankees in the Florida State League for use. He finished the season with a .323 batting average with 22 RBIs and 30 stolen bases . In 2007 he was used in 54 games for the Double-A club Trenton Thunder before he was called up because of his achievements in the Triple-A team of the Yankees, Scranton / Wilkes-Barre Yankees . There he reached a batting average of .260 and 21 stolen bases in 45 games. In 2008 he continued his good results with the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre Yankees. Overall, Gardner achieved a batting average of .291 and an on-base percentage of .389 and 153 stolen bases in the minor leagues .

On June 30, 2008, Gardner was named to the New York Yankees team. Although he was sent back to the Yankees Triple A team on July 26, 2008, he returned to the Major League on August 15, 2008. On September 21, 2008, he scored the last run as a pinch runner for Jason Giambi at the old Yankee Stadium . For the 2009 season, Gardner received the centerfielder's place on the grid instead of Melky Cabrera . He scored his first home run on May 13, 2009 in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays . Also in the 2010 season he is part of the starting line-up in the outfield.

Gardner is one of the fastest players in the Major League alongside Ichirō Suzuki , Carl Crawford , Austin Jackson and Juan Pierre . He is known for his often successful attempts to steal a base.

Private life

Gardner and his wife Jessica have a son named Hunter, who was born in November 2008. His father played in the minor league for the Philadelphia Phillies .
