Philip Joseph "Phil" Hughes (* 24. June 1986 in Mission Viejo , California ) is an American baseball player in Major League . He currently plays as the starting pitcher for the Minnesota Twins .

biography

High school

Hughes attended Foothill High School in Santa Ana , California. In the local baseball team he managed a perfect game ; he was also the first All-American pitcher on his team. In 2003 he scored 12 wins, suffered no loss and had an ERA of 0.78. In his final high school year in 2004, his ERA improved to 0.69 with 9 wins and one loss.

In 2004, Hughes was elected by the New York Yankees in the first round of the MLB Draft (23rd elected player ever).

Minor Leagues

In 2005 Hughes played in the minor leagues in the Yankees' farming system (Charleston RiverDogs and Tampa Yankees). After scoring nine wins in two losses, an ERA of 1.24 and 93 strikeouts in 85⅓ innings, he received an invitation from the Yankees to spring training in 2006, but then returned to the Tampa Yankees. During the season he moved to the Double-A team Trenton Thunder. Because of his performance, Baseball America magazine rated Hughes as the Yankees' most promising player in the minor leagues. After participating in the Yankees' spring training again, Hughes began the 2007 season with the Triple-A Team Scranton / Wilkes-Barre Yankees . In 2007, in the list of the Top 100 Most Promising Players by Baseball America magazine , Hughes took fourth place.

Major League

On April 26, 2007 Hughes made his debut as the second youngest player in the American League against the Toronto Blue Jays . In 4⅓ innings he allowed four runs on seven hits and received the first defeat in the MLB. In his second start against the Texas Rangers , however, he managed a no-hitter for 6⅓ innings before he had to leave the mound due to an injury . In the 2007 postseason , Hughs was used as a substitute pitcher in game two and three of the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Indians .

Hughes started the 2008 season with the Yankees, but was sent back to the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre Yankees after an injury. He didn't return to the Yankees until September 2008 and started in two games, both of which he won.

Despite the good performances shown at the end of the season, Hughes was sent back to the Triple A team and started the 2009 season there . In late April, he was called back to the Yankees after an injury to Chien-Ming Wang . By the beginning of June, Hughes was allowed to compete in seven games as a starting pitcher; He was able to win three games of which he lost two. In a game against the Texas Rangers, he threw eight innings without allowing a run. After Wang returned from the injury list, Hughes was sent to the bullpen and was used as a substitute pitcher for the remainder of the regular season, as well as in the play-offs and the 2009 World Series .

After completing spring training, Hughes was nominated for the 2010 season as the fifth starting pitcher of the Yankees. With five straight wins, he got off to a strong start, holding a no-hitter against the Oakland Athletics into the eighth inning. In this game he achieved a career best with 10 strikeouts. After losing a game to the New York Mets , he started a second series of five straight games. In early July he was named to the All-Star Team of the American League. With 18 wins in the regular season, he was fourth in the American League. In the postseason he was used as a starting pitcher in both ALDS and ALCS .
