Maxwell Steven Muncy (born August 25, 1990 in Midland , Texas ) is an American baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball (MLB). He played for the Oakland Athletics in 2015 and 2016, and joined the Dodgers in 2018.

Career

Oakland Athletics

The Oakland Athletics selected Muncy in the fifth round of the 2012 MLB Draft . He made his debut with the Burlington Bees in the Midwest League and had a batting average of .275, an on-base percentage of .383, a slugging percentage of .432 and scored four home runs in 64 games. He began the 2013 season with the Stockton Ports in the California League before being promoted to the Midland RockHounds of the Texas League . At the time of his promotion, he was leading the California League with 21 home runs and 76 RBIs. Muncy achieved a total of .273 / .381 / .476 with 25 home runs and 100 RBIs. After the season he played for the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League . He returned to Midland in 2014.

Muncy began the 2015 season with the Nashville Sounds of the Pacific Coast League (PCL) but was promoted to Major League Baseball on April 25 after second baseman Ben Zobrist was placed on the 15-day Disabled List. On May 17, 2015, Muncy scored his first MLB hit against Chicago White Sox pitcher Jeff Samardzija . In 2015, he beat .206 in 45 games for Oakland. He split the 2016 season between Nashville and Oakland, beating .186 in 51 major league games in 2016. The Athletics released Muncy towards the end of Spring Training 2017.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Muncy signed a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 27, 2017, and they assigned Muncy to the PCL's Oklahoma City Dodgers . In 109 games, he beat .309 with 12 homers and 44 RBIs. Muncy was called to join the Dodgers on April 17, 2018. He hit his 20th home run for the Dodgers in his 183rd At-Bat and set a franchise record. Muncy was selected as a candidate for the All-Star Final Vote for the MLB All-Star Game 2018 , but only finished third in the vote. He accepted an offer to participate in the Home Run Derby during the All-Star break. After defeating Javier Baez in the first round of the derby, he lost to eventual winner Bryce Harper in the semifinals. Muncy led the Dodgers in home runs and finished fifth in the National League with 35 home runs. He finished second with 79 RBIs for the Dodgers, despite only playing in 137 games. Muncy also showed his versatility when he started playing games on first base (58), third base (30) and second base (13) and also played in the outfield .

In the 2018 World Series , Muncy hit a walk-off home run in the 18th inning of Game 3, finishing the longest game (by innings and time) in World Series history in 7 hours and 23 minutes.

Muncy was selected as an injury replacement for the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game . It is Muncy's first all-star game. In the game, he replaced the third baseman Anthony Rendon of the Washington Nationals .
