The Texas League is a minor league baseball league that operates in the southern central United States . The league is classified as a double-A league. Despite the league's name, only the four teams in the Sothern Division are actually Texas based. The four teams of the Northern Division are located in the surrounding states of Oklahoma , Arkansas and Missouri . The league is headquartered in San Antonio .

history

The league was founded in 1888 and ran until 1892. It was referred to as the Texas Association in 1895, the Texas Southern League in 1896, and the Texas League again from 1897 to 1899. It was revived as a Class D league in 1902 and moved to Class C in 1904. In 1906 the league was again run as a Class D league until it was moved back to Class C in 1907. In 1920 the league played in Class B and finally in 1921 in Class A. The Texas League, like many others, was closed during World War II. From 1959 to 1961, the Texas League and Mexican League formed the Pan American Association. By 1971, both the Texas League and the Southern League had declined to seven teams.

Teams move

The Texas League has seen many changes over the past few years. The teams that were once known as the Jackson Mets, El Paso Diablos, Shreveport Captains, and Wichita Wranglers have all moved to new cities and larger stadiums.

In 2019 the San Antonio Missions plan to move to Amarillo , Texas. The Colorado Springs Sky Sox of the Pacific Coast League will move to San Antonio and continue their missions on the Triple-A level. The "new" missions will play in the Pacific Coast League.
