Geography and traffic

The city is located on the National Road 365 A of Bishkek on Kant and Tokmok to balykchy at the western end of the Issyk Kul -Sees and on the railway line Bishkek balykchy . It is about 90 km to Bishkek in the west, 32 km to Tokmok (also in the west) and 53 km to Balyktschy in the east.

The river Tschüi , which forms the border with Kazakhstan here, flows only a few hundred meters north of the city to the west, and between it and Kemin runs an approximately 40 km long main irrigation canal , which is derived from Tschüi at Tschüiskoje and ends at Tokmok.

Economic and population development

During the times of the Soviet Union , several industrial companies were settled in Kemin (electrical engineering, linoleum production, building materials, etc.), but they largely ceased operations after the collapse of the Soviet Union . With this, and with the departure of many Russians from the city and from Kyrgyzstan, the population also fell from almost 14,000 in 1989 to just over 8,000 today.
