Masahiro Tanaka ( Japanese 田中 将 大 ; born November 1, 1988 in Itami , Hyōgo Prefecture ) is a Japanese baseball player in the US Major League Baseball (MLB) position of pitcher who has been playing for the New York Yankees since 2014 .

Life

Masahiro Tanaka was born on November 1, 1988, the oldest of two children. After graduating from high school, the Japanese professional teams Hokkaidō Nippon Ham Fighters , Yokohama DeNA BayStars , Tōhoku Rakuten Golden Eagles and Orix Buffaloes wanted to sign him. When draft in autumn 2006, Tanaka was in the first round of the Golden Eagles drafted .

Tanaka made his debut as a professional baseball player at the age of 18 for the season opening of the Golden Eagles on March 29, 2007 in the position of pitcher. He finished the season by winning eleven games and losing seven in 28 starts, with an Earned Run Average (ERA) of 3.82.

With the national team he took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and won the gold medal at the World Baseball Classic in 2009 .

In January 2013 Tanaka publicly expressed interest in switching to the MLB for the 2014 season. In December 2013, Tanaka was courted by the MLB teams with high bonus payments. The Arizona Diamondbacks , the New York Yankees , the   Texas Rangers , the Los Angeles Dodgers , the Chicago Cubs , the Los Angeles Angels , the Boston Red Sox , the Atlanta Braves , the Chicago White Sox and the Seattle Mariners all offered him one Signing Bonus of over $ 20 million. In January 2014 Tanaka signed a contract with the New York Yankees from the American League (AL).

Private

In 2012 Tanaka announced his wedding to actress Mai Satoda. The two married that same year and have a son.
