Puerto Cabello is a city and the largest port in the country on the north coast of Venezuela in the state of Carabobo . It is located about 75 kilometers west of Caracas .
history
The port was founded in the middle of the 16th century because its strategic location made it possible to moor entire fleets of the Spanish Armada. Puerto Cabello means hair harbor .
During the settlement of the country, it developed into an important trading center with the export of cocoa, coffee and cotton. This made it a popular target for pirates, so the Spanish built the fortress of San Felipe for defense.
During the War of Independence , Puerto Cabello was the last Spanish base until it was conquered by José Antonio Páez in 1823 . Edward Wilmot Blyden lived in the city from 1842 to 1844 . The lyricist Wilhelm Lehmann was born here in 1882, and the composer and violinist Augusto Brandt in 1892 .
During the Venezuela crisis hijacked and then 75 days under the command of Titus door standing Restaurador was returned after the end of the crisis in Porto Cabello.
Attractions
Puerto Cabello connects Valencia with the Caribbean. From here you can reach the beaches of Patanemo or, via Morón, the Morrocoy National Park in the state of Falcón.
The old town still has a few streets with colonial architecture. At the port is the old fortress of San Felipe, which was built by the Spanish in the first half of the 18th century. Near Puerto Cabello is the Solano fortress.
The old cemetery has a number of graves of 19th century German immigrants.
The Isla Larga (Long Island) is visited by divers.
