Augusto Brandt

Augusto Brandt (* 1892 in Puerto Cabello , † 1942 in Caracas ) was a Venezuelan composer and violinist.

Life

The son of German immigrants and younger brother of the writer Carlos Brandt had piano lessons with Ana Jhan Wittestein as a child and composed his first pieces at the age of six. From 1903 he studied violin in Caracas . In 1910, a triumphal march he composed for the centenary of the revolution under Simón Bolívar was performed in the city's Teatro Municipal .

With a grant from the Venezuelan government, he went to Belgium. There he was a student of César Thomson at the Brussels Conservatory, where he graduated with first prize in violin. He then lived in New York , where he was first violinist in the orchestra of the Paramount Theater. He later switched to the orchestra of the radio station WOR . Here he worked first as the first violinist, later also as a solo violinist and conductor.

After the death of the dictator Juan Vicente Gómez , Brandt returned to Venezuela, where he and his brother Carlos earned a great reputation for their commitment to human rights.
