The New York Mets qualified very easily for the 1986 NLCS after dominating the East Division all season. The regular season was completed with 108 wins with only 54 defeats and a win rate of over 81%. Only two teams in the history of the National League could win more games in the course of a regular season: The Chicago Cubs of 1906 (116 wins) and the Pittsburgh Pirates of 1909 (110 wins).

In the West Division, the Houston Astros were the winners with a 10-game lead over the Cincinnati Reds from the regular season. In the end, there were 96 wins against 66 defeats. First baseman Glenn Davis played an outstanding round and scored 91 runs for the Astros, including 31 home runs and 101 RBIs. Dave Smith also set a new club record for saves (33) in one season.

The home law in the NLCS changed annually from 1969 to 1993 between East and West Division. Since it was the turn of the East Division in 1986, the Mets had home rights. This meant that the first two games were each held in Houston at the Astrodome , and games three, four and five were each held at Shea Stadium in New York. At game six, the Astros were the hosts again. If there had been a decisive game seven, the Mets would have had home rights again.
