The National League Championship Series (NLCS) is part of the play-offs in Major League Baseball . In it, the two winners of the National League Division Series play for the championship of the National League and the entry into the World Series . There the winner meets the winner of the American League Championship Series .

history

The National League Championship Series was launched in 1969 after the National League was divided into two divisions, East and West. It was a best-of-five series, the winner of which entered the World Series. In 1985 the series was expanded to a best-of-seven. In 1994 the National League was restructured again and divided into three divisions (East, Central, West). Since then, the participants in the Championship Series have been determined in the previous National League Division Series , in which the three division winners and a wildcard team take part.

Since the series was expanded to include best-of-seven, it has been played in a 2-3-2 format: Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 (if necessary) are played in the stadium of the team that has the home field advantage (Home Field Advantage ) Has; the remaining games in the opponent's stadium. The series ends as soon as a team has won four wins. Since 1995, the team that has won the most games in the regular season has received the Home Field Advantage . However, if this is the wildcard team, the other team receives home advantage. If both teams have the same number of wins, the direct comparison decides. From 1969 to 1993, however, the Home Field Advantage switched between the two divisions.

The Milwaukee Brewers are the only National League team that has never played in the NLCS. However, they won the American League Championship Series in 1982 during their time in the American League (1969-1997).

The NLCS winner will receive the Warren C. Giles Trophy.
