Heath Bell (born September 29, 1977 in Oceanside , California ) is a retired American baseball player who was active as a closer in Major League Baseball for a total of eleven years .

Before the professional career

Right-handed pitcher Bell attended Tustin High School in Tustin , California, where he played American football , basketball and baseball . Bell attended Santiago Canyon College and was called up in 1997 as the new "All-American".

Professional career

Bell was selected in 1997 in the 69th round of the draft by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays , but his real professional career began in 1998 when he signed a contract with the New York Mets as a free agent . He made his Major League debut on August 24, 2004 when he threw two innings with two strikeouts against the San Diego Padres and did not allow an earned run .

Bell throws roughly one strikeout per inning, but in his second professional season he allowed an average of 10.8 hits per inning and has a comparatively high ERA of 5.59.

On March 24, 2015, Bell announced its retirement from active sports.

Bell is married, has three children and lives in Port St. Lucie ( Florida ). He is the cousin of both singer and actor Drake Bell and basketball player Erik Meek .
