David Allen Wright (born December 20, 1982 in Norfolk , Virginia ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB). The third baseman played throughout his career with the New York Mets from the National League , from which he was selected in the 2001 MLB Draft . Wright was the captain of the New York Mets from 2013 to 2018 and also the owner of various team-internal records for the baseball club.

Career

Minor Leagues

David Wright was selected in the MLB Draft 2001 in the addition to the first round in 38th place overall by the New York Mets and signed his first professional contract on July 12, 2001. In the same year he played 36 games at rookie level with the Kingsport Mets, before joining the Capital City Bombers, then the Mets' Class A Team, in 2002. In his first full season, Wright had 85 runs and 93 RBI in 135 games . In 2003 he was promoted to the St. Lucie Mets , the high-A farm team of the franchise , where he was also a regular part of the team and was able to convince with consistently good performance. The following year he went through the two highest minor league levels at the Binghamton Mets and the Norfolk Tides , before he was appointed to the squad of the major league team for the first time in July 2004.

2004-2008

David Wright made his debut on July 21, 2004 for the New York Mets in a 5-4 home win against the Montreal Expos . His first two hits in the MLB came a day later, he hit his first home run in his fifth appearance. Opponents were also the Expos in both cases. During the season Wright came to 69 missions.

In his first full MLB season in 2005, Wright convinced in 160 games with a batting average of 30.6%, 102 RBI and 27 home runs and ended up in 19th place in the election for the MVP of the National League.

In the 2006 season Wright was invited to the MLB All-Star Game for the first time and also qualified with the Mets for the first time for the post season . In the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers , who win the Mets with a 3-0 sweep , he scored four hits and contributed four RBI. The National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals was lost 3-4 after seven games. Wright scored his first playoff home run in a 12: 5 away win at Busch Stadium in Game 4 of the series.

In the 2007 season Wright was invited again to the All Star game . At the end of the season he landed in fourth place in the National League MVP election . After an impressive season with a batting average of .325, 107 RBI and 30 home runs, he won the Silver Slugger Award for Third Baseman in the National League. He was also recognized for his defensive performance and received the Gold Glove for the most superior individual fielding performance of a third baseman in the NL. Since he was able to steal more than 30, more precisely 34 bases in addition to his 30 home runs , Wright made it to the 30-30 club as the third player in the Mets after Howard Johnson and Darryl Strawberry .

David Wright was able to continue his above-average performance in the 2008 MLB season . He achieved personal career highs at RBIs (124), home runs (33) and runs (115). He was also the player with the most sacrifice fly in the league (11). After 2007, Wright was awarded the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger for the second year in a row for both his defensive and offensive performance.

2009–2012

For the 2009 season , the New York Mets moved to their new stadium, Citi Field, and Wright was the Mets player who hit a home run in the new ball park. On August 15, Wright injured himself in the head of San Francisco pitcher Matt Cain after a hit by pitch at 150 km / h . Wright was immediately taken to the Hospital for Special Surgery , where computed tomography could rule out more serious injuries. A day later, he walked out of the hospital diagnosed with a concussion , which caused him to pause 15 games.

The 2010 season began for Wright in the first at bat of the opening game with a two-run home run. The 2010 MLB All-Star Game in Anaheim was the fifth in a row that Wright was elected to the National League team. He finished the season with the worst batting average of his career (.283), but with the most Sacrifice Fly (12) he has ever received in a year.

The first half of the 2011 season was marked by a back injury that put Wright on the Disabled List for two months . He then missed a total of 58 games in a row in the regular season from May 16 to July 21. On August 7, 2011 Wright played for the first time as a shortstop , because both the regular player in this position José Reyes and substitute Daniel Murphy injured. Ultimately, Wright only played 102 games in the season and his batting average again dropped to a new career low of 25.4%.

In 2012 David Wright was able to play a full season again and was invited to the MLB All-Star Game for the sixth time after a year break. He was able to increase his batting average again to over 30% and with 93 was only just below the 100 RBI mark.

2013-2016

After jumping training in preparation for the 2013 season , manager Terry Collins announced that Wright had become the fourth player to be named captain of the Mets after Keith Hernandez , Gary Carter and John Franco . David Wright was honored and proud of the decision. However, since his appointment, Wright has decided not to wear the "C" symbolizing the task on the jersey, in consultation with the team leaders and fellow players.

The 2013 MLB All-Star Game , which took place at Citi Field, the home of the Mets, was the seventh and to date last selection game in which Wright participated. Due to another injury, he only played 112 games at the end of the 2013 season , but was otherwise able to confirm his performances and statistics from the previous year.

The 2014 season showed that Wright's performance suffered more and more from his health problems. Problems in his shoulder muscles prevented him from swinging as well as from fielding. At the end of the season he only had eight home runs, at least the least of his career.

His physical problems continued in 2015 when he pulled an Achilles tendon while trying to steal a base in April . Wright was also diagnosed with spinal stenosis later in the season . After his convalescence , he was then used to build up the St. Lucie Mets , the Mets ' high-A farm team. On September 1, 2015, he returned to the MLB squad and ended the regular season with only 38 appearances. The Mets qualified for the first time in eight years for the post season and Wright came back to play-offs after 2006. In the National League Division Series 2015 (NLDS) against the Los Angeles Dodgers , he managed only one hit at 16 at-bats, which corresponds to a batting average of only .063, but was able to contribute two RBI to the Mets' victory in the series. The National League Championship Series in 2015 , in which the Mets, the Chicago Cubs 4: 0 games sweepten went with four hits, two doubles and a stolen base success for him as it NLDS. The 2015 World Series against the Kansas City Royals , the first World Series in Wright's career, was lost 4-1. David Wright hit a home run in Game 3 and contributed 4 RBI to the Mets' only win in the series.

At the start of the 2016 season , Wright had regular breaks, usually every 3 to 5 games. This is also due to his warm-up program before the games. Due to his spinal stenosis, he has to do extensive exercises before each game. It takes four to five hours from the start of individual game preparation to the start of the game. On June 3, 2016, Wright was placed on the Disabled List again due to a herniated disc and will be out for at least six weeks.

David Wright holds several New York Mets team records. Among other things, he has the most at bats, runs, hits, RBIs and walks in the history of the franchise in his statistics.

National team

David Wright has already participated in the World Baseball Classic twice for the US national baseball team.

At the second World Baseball Classic 2009 Wright reached the semifinals with the USA, which was lost to Japan 4: 9. In eight games he got nine hits, one double and five RBIs.

At the 2013 World Baseball Classic , Wright only made four appearances due to problems with his ribs , but still had the most of all players in the tournament with ten RBI. In addition, he achieved the best average of the Americans with .438. In the game against Italy, he also hit a Grand Slam . The USA team missed qualifying for the semi-finals and finished the tournament in sixth place.

Wright has been involved in charity for a long time and founded the David Wright Foundation in 2005, which supports children in need with their physical and emotional development, as well as with education.
