Terry Lee Collins (born May 27, 1949 in Midland , Michigan ) is an American baseball manager in Major League Baseball . He is currently under contract with the New York Mets in Major League Baseball.
Collins never played in the major league as a player. Before he started his coaching career, he was shortstop in the minor leagues .
Career
Collins initially managed the Albuquerque Dukes team in the Pacific Coast League, the Buffalo Bisons in the International League and the Duluth Huskies in the Northwoods League.
After the Houston Astros fired their manager Art Howe in 1993 , Collins took over his position on the MLB team. He led the team until the end of 1996. After the team collapsed at the end of the season, he was fired.
For the 1997 season Collins signed a contract with the Anaheim Angels , with which he could achieve positive results in the following two seasons. In both 1997 and 1998 the team finished second in the division. In 1999, Collins canceled his contract 29 games before the end of the season after losing support from the players.
After a long period of inactivity, Collins signed a contract with the Orix Buffaloes in the Japanese Pacific League in 2006 , where he was active until May 21, 2008. The end of his engagement was caused by a 3-7 interleague defeat against the Hanshin Tigers . At the end of the year, Collins took over the Chinese national baseball team.
After Collins spent the 2010 season as field coordinator for the Mets in the minor league, he was officially introduced as the new manager of the New York Mets on November 23, 2010. In honor of his mentor Jim Leyland, under whom he was active as a coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992 , Collins will wear jersey number 10.
