Oscar D'León , real name Oscar Emilio León Somoza, (born July 11, 1943 in Caracas ) is a Venezuelan salsa musician. His nicknames are El Diablo de la Salsa ("the devil of salsa"), El Bajo Danzante , El León de la Salsa ("the lion of salsa"), El Sonero del Mundo ("the son of the world") and El Sonero Mayor ("the greatest Son singer"). The graduate topographer has (at least) twelve children.

biography

Before his musical career, D'León was a taxi driver and factory worker for many years, taught himself to sing and play the double bass . With percussionist José Rodríguez and the trombonists César Monge and José Antonio Rojas, he formed La Dimensión Latina in 1972 . Probably his best known song is "Llorarás," which he recorded in 1975 in this formation together with Wladimir Lozano .

In 1977 D'León left this band, founded his own orchestra, La Salsa Mayor, and in 1978 with Mauricio Silva La Crítica in memory of Cuban Rumba legends such as Miguelito Valdés .

In the 1980s, D'León had great success. After successful tours of America and Spain , D'León was the first Latino to get a contract with the BBC .

He has u. a. worked with Celia Cruz , Cheo Feliciano , La India , Tego Calderón and Tito Puente (“Hay que trabajar”).
