Mimi Fox

Mimi Fox (born August 24, 1956 in Queens , New York City ) is an American jazz guitarist and music teacher.

Live and act

Fox's father was an amateur drummer and Dixieland fan, and her mother was a professional singer. At nine she played drums in the school band, at ten she switched to guitar, initially oriented towards funk, R&B and top 40 music. At the age of 14 Fox discovered the music of John Coltrane through the album Giant Steps and began to be more interested in jazz music. In 1979 she moved to San Francisco and took lessons from Bruce Forman , who convinced her to become a professional musician. Since then she has played a. a. with guitarists Charlie Byrd , Stanley Jordan , Charlie Hunter and Mundell Lowe , also with Branford Marsalis , David Sánchez , Houston Person , Abbey Lincoln , Diana Krall , Kevin Mahogany , Janis Siegel , Joey DeFrancesco , Barbara Dennerlein , Dr. Lonnie Smith , Terri Lyne Carrington as well as Stevie Wonder and John Sebastian . She played at numerous jazz festivals on the American west coast and the Caribbean and toured Japan, Thailand and Australia. She also recorded with Don Lanphere , Robin Flower, Silvia Kohan and Maye Cavallaro.

In 1987 her debut album Against the Grain was released . Her album Kicks reached number 20 on the Billboard Jazz Charts .

Fox teaches at the Berkeley Jazz School and was an adjunct professor at New York University . She also wrote a guitar textbook and created a CD-ROM-based course ( Jazz Anatomy ).

Prizes and awards

Since 2003 he has won the Down Beat critics poll three times in a row .
