Charlie Hunter (* 23. May 1967 in Providence , Rhode Iceland) is an American jazz - rock - and fusion - guitarist .

Hunter grew up in Berkeley ( California ) that graduated from Berkeley High School and took guitar lessons when guitarist Joe Satriani . Since the Charlie Hunter Trio's first album in 1993, Hunter has recorded more than 15 other albums. During this time he has worked with many artists such as B. Miles Perkins, Scott Amendola , Will Bernard, Skerik, Jay Lane , Dave Ellis, John Ellis , Mimi Fox , Peter Apfelbaum , Stefon Harris , Kurt Elling , Bobby Previte , Greg Osby , Chris Lovejoy, Leon Parker , Karl Denson , Josh Roseman , John Santos, John Schott, D'Angelo, Calder Spanier, Mos Def , Norah Jones , Adam Cruz, Phil deGruy, John Mayer , Curtis Fowlkes and Willard Dyson.

Hunter advocates the unrestricted distribution of his live concerts. Recorded live events can be downloaded in digital form over the Internet from the San Francisco -based nonprofit Internet Archive .

Hunter is best known for playing an eight-string hybrid guitar built by Ralph Novak of Novax Guitars. He simultaneously plays lead guitar on the top 5 strings (tuned to ADGHe) and bass guitar (tuned to EAD) on the bottom three strings. Using a Hughes & Kettner Tube Rotosphere (Leslie rotary loudspeaker simulator), its unique playing style produces a sound similar to a Hammond organ . He also played a 7-string guitar in Michael Franti's political hip-hop group The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy . This was an opening act for U2's Zoo TV Tour in 1992 .

He also participated in the soundtrack of the French film Outre Mer with the jazz fusion band Garage A Trois .
