Masa Kamaguchi

Masatoshi "Masa" Kamaguchi ( Japanese 釜 口 雅敏 , Kamaguchi Masatoshi ; * 1966 in Wakkanai , Hokkaido ) is a Japanese jazz musician ( double bass ).

Live and act

Kamaguchi began 14 years ago - influenced by Jaco Pastorius - electric bass playing. In 1985 he moved to Tokyo to study engineering at Hōsei University . He also played the double bass and had private lessons with Yoshio Ikeda , a student of Gary Peacock . In 1990 he continued his studies at Berklee College of Music , where he took lessons from Joe Hunt . During this time Kamaguchi played with musicians such as George Garzone , Bert Seager, Hal Crook , Herb Pomeroy and Frank Carlberg ; he also toured Europe. In 1994 he moved to New York City, where he a. a. worked with Frank Kimbrough , Sonny Simmons , Ben Monder , David Murray , Toots Thielemans , Tony Malaby and Charles Gayle .

Kamaguchi played in Massachusetts in the 1990s in Jimmy Weinstein 's Natural Coincidence, in the John O'Gallagher Trio, NAM (with Ahmed Abdullah , Alex Harding , Jimmy Weinstein) and in the Roberta Piket Trio. In the field of jazz, he was involved in 33 recording sessions between 1993 and 2015, in addition to the aforementioned also with Jacques Schwarz-Bart ( Immersion ) and Frank Kimbrough ( Play , 2005, with Paul Motian ). In 2006 he moved to Barcelona and played with American and European musicians such as Vinnie Sperrazza , Jacob Sacks , Perico Sambeat , Javier Vercher and Mariola Membrives . In 2016 he was a member of Russ Lossing's trio / quartet ; In 2018 he performed with Harris Eisenstadt .
