Rob Garcia

Rob Garcia (* 1969 , actually Robert Garcia ) is an American jazz musician ( drums , composition ).

Live and act

Garcia grew up in Pelham ; his father, an architect, owned a record collection with music from the 1920s and 1930s by Louis Armstrong , Duke Ellington and Bix Beiderbecke . In his youth he listened to rock music and The Who drummer Keith Moon inspired him to become a drummer. He then had lessons from Bob Merigliano and attended the jazz clubs of New York with his father , which he turned back to jazz. In the following years Charli Persip , Steve Davis and Adam Nussbaum became his teachers. He earned his bachelor's degree from New York University and his master's of music from SUNY Purchase.

From the 1990s Garcia was then active in the jazz scene in New York and especially Brooklyn ; first recordings were made in 1995 with The Splendid Jazz Band . In the following years he worked with musicians such as Wynton Marsalis , Joseph Jarman , Anat Cohen , Sam Newsome , Judi Silvano , Woody Allen ( Wild Man Blues ), Howard Alden , Lynne Arriale , Brad Shepik , John Benitez , John Bunch , Dena DeRose , Chris Cheek and Vince Giordano . Furthermore, he has so far released five albums under his own name, three of them with his band Rob Garcia 4 on Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records . With the formation he appeared in clubs such as Iridium Jazz Club , Kitano, Smalls , The Rex, Cornelia Street Cafe and Firehouse 12, as well as at the JVC Jazz Festival , the New York Jazz Festival and the Vision Festival . He has also received scholarships from Meet the Composer , DCA, and New York State Council on the Arts.

Garcia was one of the founders of the Connection Works non-profit organization , which he runs and organizes jazz concerts and music education events. He is also a member of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground and Douglass Street Music Collective . Furthermore he works in the spiritual realm as a healer; he graduated from the IM School of Healing Arts and the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. In the field of jazz he was involved in 40 recording sessions between 1995 and 2014, including a. with Stephan Crump , Peck Allmond , Marty Grosz , Vince Giordano , Catherine Russell , Biagio Coppa and most recently with Gary Lucas ' Fleischerei Featuring Sarah Stiles. Currently (2019) he leads a quartet that includes Noah Preminger, Gary Versace and John Hébert ; he also works with Phillip Johnston & The Silent Six.
