David Ambrosio

David "Dave" Ambrosio (born April 1, 1968 ) is an American musician ( double bass ) of modern jazz who is also active as a Batá drummer .

Live and act

Ambrosio has degrees in classical composition and jazz performance. Since the late 1990s he has worked with musicians such as Christophe Schweizer , Michael McGinnis , Matt Renzi , George Schuller , Rob Garcia , Don Peretz and Eri Yamamoto . He was one of the leaders of the collaborative formations 40Twenty and Grupo Los Santos , with whom he released the albums Clave Heart (Origin Arts 2012) and Lo que somos lo que sea (Deep Tone 2007). In 2001 he had the opportunity to perform in Cuba with Grupo Los Santos , Max Pollack's Rumbatap and local Afro-Cuban folklore and dance ensembles. Soon after, he began twelve years of intensive study of Afro-Cuban Batá drumming with master drummers Miguel Bernal, Carlos Gomez and Carlos Aldama. He toured frequently in Central and Southeast Asia on behalf of the US State Department. Ambrosio also works with the BMI / New York Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Jim McNeely .

In a trio with Loren Stillman and Russ Meissner , Ambrosio released the two albums Gone (2014) and Four on the Road (2018) under his own name on Fresh Sound New Talent . In the sextet, which he led with drummer Russ Meissner, he released Moments in Time on SteepleChase Records in 2016 , with Loren Stillman, Nate Radley , Chris Cheek , Leonard Thompson (piano). In the field of jazz, he was involved in 43 recording sessions between 1998 and 2018, according to Tom Lord . Ambrosio has also performed with Kenny Werner , Terry Gibbs , Buddy DeFranco , George Garzone , Joseph Jarman and Ralph Alessi . Together with Donny McCaslin , Duane Eubanks , Bruce Barth and Victor Lewis , he also plays in the quintet Civil Disobedience , which interprets music by Bobby Hutcherson , Jackie McLean , Stanley Cowell , Howard Land , Joe Chambers and James Spaulding . With the Trio Trio (with Rich Perry & Dave Scott ) the album Nice Treatment was released by SteepleChase in 2019 . Tim Hagans , Joel Frahm and Billy Mintz play in his quartet . Currently (2019) Ambrosio also leads a quintet that includes John Carlson (trumpet), Hery Paz (tenor saxophone), Bruce Barth (piano) and Jay Sawyer (drums).
