Gustav Berndt

Christian Gustav Berndt (born 1799 in Leipzig ; died August 5, 1864 there ), was a German fencing master .

Gustav Berndt had succeeded the fencing master Johann Adolf Ludwig Werner at the University of Leipzig in 1826 . In 1823 he was appointed as Werner's lead fencer . He was later sworn in to a new fencing master's instruction signed by Rector Christian Daniel Beck on September 10, 1829. In the minutes of the Senate of the Academic Senate of the University of Leipzig of October 24, 1833, it was noted that Berndt approached him with a "plan for a gymnastics institute". This in turn marks the beginning of actual university sport in Leipzig. It is possible that this was based on a suggestion by Werner. One on whom he made a great impression was Ferdinand Goetz , whom he had introduced to fencing. The real practical design took place under Hermann Altrock , which was connected with the establishment of the Institute for Physical Education. Berndt's successor as university fencing master in Leipzig was Ludwig Caesar Roux .
