Paul Murphy (musician)

Paul Murphy (* 1949 in Worcester (Massachusetts) ) is an American drummer of avant-garde jazz and new improvisation music .

Paul Murphy grew up in Washington, DC and had drum lessons with Gene Krupa and then with Louis Bellson at the age of seven . At the age of 16 he played bebop with the Ellington bassist Billy Taylor .

After playing primarily with local jazz and blues musicians from the Washington scene, he moved to the west coast of the USA in 1970 . There he worked in the avant-garde scene in the San Francisco Bay Area , particularly with pianist Mary Anne Driscoll and tenor saxophonist Arthur Baron . In 1974 Jimmy Lyons heard him in Oakland and convinced him to move to New York. Murphy worked there as managing director of Rashied Ali's loft club, Ali's Alley .

In the summer of that year Murphy joined Jimmy Lyons' band, with whom he would work for the next eight years and also toured Europe. In 1985 he also worked on Lyon's Black Saint album Give it Up with Enrico Rava . During this time, which he spent in New York, Murphy also led his own quintet with trumpeter Dewey Johnson , bassist Jay Oliver , bassoon player Karen Borca and Mary Anne Driscoll. During this time he also worked with musicians as diverse as Larry Willis , Jaki Byard , Sun Ra and Eddie Gale .

The death of Jimmy Lyon in 1986 caused a temporary departure from the jazz scene; Murphy worked as a stage musician in Las Vegas for a year and a half. At the end of 1987 he returned to the Bay Area and worked there with musicians such as Glen Spearman , William Parker , Raphe Malik , the violinist India Cook and Kash Killion . With his trio Hurricane he recorded the album Suite of Winds in 1986 with Spearman and Parker and played in a duo with Larry Willis .

In 1990 Murphy moved back to Washington, DC, where he worked on recordings for the Mapleshade Records label , including Clifford Jordan and Ran Blake . Murphy is currently working with his formation Break Away , ( Excursions and Exposé ) with Jere Carroll and Joel Futterman and again Larry Willis. In 1997 he played again with Parker and Spearman ( Live at Fire in the Valley ).

In the course of his career, Muphy was regularly active as a studio and touring drummer outside the avant-garde scene. a. for Tina Turner and the band Journey .
