Buck Hill

Roger "Buck" Hill (* 13. February 1927 in Washington, DC ; † 20th March 2017 ) was an American jazz - tenor saxophonist .

biography

Buck Hill began his career in 1943, but could not make a living from music for a long time and worked as a postman for over thirty years . In 1958/59 he played with Charlie Byrd and was only occasionally active as a musician in the 1960s. like John Eaton . In 1973 he recorded with Washington trumpeter Allan Houser. From the late 1970s, he finally recorded several albums as a leader for the SteepleChase label, which he recorded with guest musicians such as Kenny Barron , Buster Williams , Reuben Brown , Barry Harris , Johnny Coles and Billy Hart . The singer Shirley Horn , who also comes from Washington, leaving him in some of their albums of the 1990s involved, so Hill is on Close Enough for Love (1988), You Will not Forget Me (1990) and finally to The Main Ingredient to Listen. Buck Hill spent most of his musical career with local musicians in the Washington, DC area; Nevertheless, after Richard Cook & Brian Morton, he is regarded as one of the important "regional jazz musicians" who is highly regarded by many of his colleagues. His saxophone style is reminiscent of Coleman Hawkins with his broad tone , although he says of himself that he was influenced by Lester Young .
