John Eaton (pianist)

John Livingston Eaton (* 29. May 1934 in Washington, DC ) is an American jazz - pianist .

Eaton is self-taught and studied English literature at Yale University from 1952 to 1956 in order to later work as a teacher. At the age of 22 he made his first appearances with Wild Bill Davison ; thereafter he worked with Willie The Lion Smith , Teddy Wilson and George Shearing . After his military service (1958) he led his own formation in the early 1960s, in which Buck Hill , Stuff Smith , Jay Leonhart , Billy Taylor (bassist) and George "Dude" Brown played.

1964/65 he worked in the trio of Tommy Gwaltney . From 1968 to 1972 he led the house band at the Blues Alley jazz club in his hometown, where he played guest musicians such as Don Byas , Roy Eldridge , Buck Clayton , Kenny Davern , Vic Dickenson , Thad Jones , Ray Nance , Zoot Sims , Benny Carter , Clark Terry and accompanied many other musicians.

In 1988 he gave a solo concert for President Reagan at the White House . In the 1990s he performed as a soloist at the Wolf Trap Performance Arts Center; John Eaton also served as a music historian on the Smithsonian Institution Performing Arts Jazz program, which was broadcast nationwide on National Public Radio and Radio Smithsonian .

Eaton released the John Eaton Presents the American Popular Song album series , which was created in cooperation with the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and is based on radio broadcasts and conversations with jazz bassist Jay Leonhart . The program introduces an artist or composer of American music , such as Richard Rodgers , Harold Arlen , George Gershwin , Jerome Kern , Cole Porter , Jule Styne , Irving Berlin , Kurt Weill , Vernon Duke , Hoagy Carmichael , Fats Waller , Duke Ellington , Harry Warren , Jimmy Van Heusen , Frank Loesser , The Beatles and Bob Dylan .
