Willis Raymond "Ray" Nance (* 10. December 1913 in Chicago , Illinois ; † 28. January 1976 in New York City , New York ) was an American jazz - trumpet player , violinist and singer .

Nance started working as a musician in 1932. He led his own group in Chicago until 1937, then played with Earl Hines (1938) and Horace Henderson (1939). From 1940 to 1963 he played with Duke Ellington's band after replacing Cootie Williams as trumpeter in Ellington's orchestra. He can be heard for the first time on Duke Ellington at Fargo, 1940 Live . He was also the only violinist in Ellington's orchestra , to be heard in titles such as "Moon Mist", and he also emerged as a singer with titles such as "A Slip of the Lip". Nance made a significant contribution to the Ellington composition " Take the A-Train " and shone as a soloist when it was recorded in 1941. With his humorous contributions he was an important part of the stage show of the Ellington Orchestra. Nance stayed in his band until 1963 and then started a solo career; In 1964 and 1965 he played with Paul Lavalle and then performed again with Ellington. He has also appeared on records with Barney Bigard , Johnny Hodges , Una Mae Carlisle , Ahmed Abdul-Malik , Rosemary Clooney and Slam Stewart , as well as Jaki Byard and Chico Hamilton . On a tour of England in 1974 he played with Chris Barber .
