Essiet Okon Essiet (* 1. September 1959 in Omaha , Nebraska ) is an American bassist of the Modern Jazz .

Essiet, whose parents are from Nigeria , received his first violin lessons at the age of ten. He switched to the double bass while attending high school in Portland, Oregon . In 1982 he worked with Don Moye and became a member of Abdullah Ibrahim's band , with whom he made his first recordings in 1983 ( Zimbabwe on Enja ) and to which he continued to belong. Several times he went on European tours with René van Helsdingen . From 1988 to 1991 he was a member of the last line-up of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and also played in the Bluesiana Triangle , which Blakey and Dr. John and David Fathead Newman made. In the 1980s he also worked as a freelance musician with Benny Golson , Jackie McLean , Curtis Fuller , Cedar Walton and in Louis Hayes ' quartet with Kirk Lightsey .

In the early 1990s he worked in Bobby Watson's formation Horizon and from 1994 with Freddie Hubbard , as well as freelance with Bobby Hutcherson , Geri Allen , George Adams and Kenny Barron . In 1995 he was involved in John Abercrombie's album Bush Crew ; In 1996 he played in the Cafe Trio run by Victor Jones and David Kikoski . In 1997 he worked on Brian Lynch's album Spheres of Influence and appeared with Carlos Ward and Pheeroan akLaff at the Saalfelden Jazz Festival . Since the late 1990s he has been part of Luluk Purwanto's band , with whom he has recorded several albums.

From 2000 he played in Michiel Borstlap's trio with Jeff Tain Watts , and in 2005 with Vincent Herring . In 2006 he was a member of the trio of Pietro Tonolo and Joe Chambers . In 2008 he performed with Donald Brown and his Space Time All Stars at the Jazz à Vienne Festival .

Since 1985 he has been a lecturer at the Conservatory in The Hague . Essiet is currently leading the Ibo formation , a Nigerian jazz project.
