Benito Gonzalez

Benito Gonzalez (* around 1975 ) is an American jazz musician ( piano , composition ) of Latin and modern jazz .

Gonzalez, who comes from a family of Venezuelan folk musicians , worked in the American jazz scene from the late 1990s; first recordings were made in 1999 when he played in the Asante formation around percussionist Charles Okyerema Asante ( Bringing the Flame Home , with Joe Ford , among others ). In 2000 he moved to Washington DC; In 2004 he recorded his debut album Starting Point with Ron Blake , René McLean , Christian McBride and Antonio Sánchez . In 2005 he won the Great American Jazz Piano Competition .

In the course of his career so far, Gonzalez u. a. with Kenny Garrett ( Seeds from the Underground , 2011), Azar Lawrence ( Mystic Journey , 2009), Curtis Fuller , Pharoah Sanders , Bobby Hutcherson , Victor Bailey , Ignacio Berroa , Billy Hart , Al Foster , Roy Hargrove , Steve Turre , Hamiet Bluiett , TK Blue , Nicholas Payton , Jackie McLean, and Eric Wyatt . In the field of jazz he was involved in 18 recording sessions between 2000 and 2017. Currently (2019) Gonzales is a member of the Mark Gross Quintet.
