René McLean
René Profit McLean (born December 16, 1946 in New York City ) is an American musician ( saxophone , flute , shakuhachi , piano ) of modern jazz , who was initially also active as an actor and dancer.
Live and act
McLean received his first saxophone lessons from his father, the jazz musician Jackie McLean , but then also from Sonny Rollins and George Coleman . In 1963 he performed with his band, which included Eddie Gale , Larry Willis and Alan Silva . He was also taught by Jaki Byard and Barry Harris ; he also played in the Clark Terry Youth Band . He studied at the University of Massachusetts for a year before continuing his studies in Japan. From 1970 to 1973 he was a member of Tito Puente's orchestra , then he played with itSam Rivers , Dizzy Gillespie , Frank Foster , Horace Silver , Grachan Moncur , Babatunde Olatunji , Lionel Hampton and Ray Charles . In addition, he and his father led a band since 1970, which released albums such as "New York Calling" (1974), "Dynasty" (1988) and "Rites of Passage" (1991). He has also performed with Joe Chambers , Abbey Lincoln , Miriam Makeba and Jaco Pastorius . In the early 1980s he worked with Hugh Masekela in Africa, with whom he has also recorded several albums. After he married a South African, he has been working in South Africa and the United States since 1984. He was also involved in recordings by Marion Brown , Tyrone Washington, Yusef Lateef , Woody Shaw and Onaje Allan Gumbs .
McLean has taught at the University of Massachusetts, where he is a professor, the New School and in South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Mauritius. At the University of Hartford , he is Professor of Afro-American Music at the Jackie McLean Institute of the Hartt School .
