Tweed Heads is the northernmost city in the Australian state of New South Wales and is located about 100 km south of Brisbane . It has grown together on the state border with Coolangatta , the southernmost district of the city of Gold Coast in the state of Queensland .

The town of Tweed Heads takes its name from the Tweed River , at the mouth of which it lies.

Tweed Heads was officially founded in 1886 and has a population of about 60,000. Already at the end of the 19th century, the place was not only a center of the timber industry, it and the coastal region became a popular holiday destination. Today it joins the Gold Coast recreation resort and is also a popular retirement home.

The area's biggest attraction is Mount Warning , the remnant of a long-extinct shield volcano , the largest in the southern hemisphere. Lamington National Park is also within easy reach .
