geography

Coolangatta is the southernmost part of the Gold Coast city. It is right on the border with the state of New South Wales . On the other side of the border is the neighboring town of Tweed Heads , which has merged with Coolangatta. Brisbane , the capital of Queensland, is 100 kilometers further north. The metropolis of Sydney is 900 kilometers south.

A few meters south of the city limits of Coolangatta, the Tweed River flows into the Pacific Ocean . In Queensland the vernacular uses the term "south of the Tweed River" to refer to places and people in the southern states of Australia.

Coolangatta has a humid , subtropical climate with warm, wet summers and cool, humid winters.

history

James Cook sailed with the Endeavor in 1770 on his first South Seas voyage past Coolangatta and called it Point Danger because of the danger posed by the indigenous people of this area. Europeans first settled down in the middle of the 19th century. From 1830 cedars were shipped from the Tweed River . From the 1880s, Coolangatta developed into a tourist destination. It was at this time that Brisbane vacationers discovered the beautiful beaches. The success of tourism was secured in 1903 by the connection to the Queensland rail network. This was followed by an increase in the number of vacationers, the establishment of a business center and the opening of the state's first lifeguard association in 1911.

Coolangatta Airport was built in the 1930s and is now officially called Gold Coast Airport .

This in turn is named after Mount Coolangatta , which is more than 1000 kilometers south, near the city of Nowra . Coolangatta means, translated from an Aboriginal language, beautiful place .
