Coordinates: 28 ° 0 ′ S , 153 ° 25 ′ E The Gold Coast City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 1334 km² and has about 556,000 inhabitants.
geography
The Gold Coast is the state's southernmost LGA on the east coast and borders New South Wales . The centers of the capital Brisbane and the Gold Coast are about 70 km apart.
The administrative headquarters of the LGA is located in the Surfers Paradise district , which has around 23,700 residents. history
Settlement of the South Coast, as the Gold Coast was called until the 1950s, began in the 1860s. In 1948, Southport and Coolangatta merged to form the South Coast Town and called themselves Gold Coast in 1958, a year later they were promoted to City.
administration
The Gold Coast City Council has 15 members. 14 Councilors are elected by the residents of the 14 divisions (constituencies). The council chairman and mayor (mayor) is also elected by all residents of the city.
