Andy Laster (born May 25, 1961 in Bethpage , New York ) is an American saxophonist , clarinetist and flutist of modern creative jazz .

Laster, who grew up on Long Island , moved to New York City in 1985 after studying jazz at the Cornish Institute . Since 1989 he has played several albums for Sound Aspects with his own groups ; his band Hydra initially included Herb Robertson , Drew Gress , Tom Rainey and Ed Schuller . He was in the groups of Dave Douglas , Tim Berne and John Zorn worked and worked the mid-1990s with the big band Orange Then Blue by George Schuller and the sextet of Julius Hemphill . He also played in the formation Weather Clear, Track Fast by Bobby Previte and worked on his Enja album Too Close for the Pole (1996). In 1998 Laster was a member of Ken Schaphorst's Big Band . Since 1995 he has recorded several albums under his own name for the avant-garde label Songlines and Knitting Factory , on which musicians such as Herb Robertson, Cuong Vu , Drew Gress, Erik Friedlander and Tom Rainey participated. He also played in Marty Ehrlich's band ( The Long View ), with Mark Helias , Hank Roberts ' Birds of Prey , with Lyle Lovett and with Harris Eisenstadt .
