Michael Musillami

Michael Allan Musillami (* 28. July 1953 in Sacramento , California ) is an American jazz - guitarist , record producer, bandleader and composer .

Life

Michael Musillami grew up in California ; early musical role models were Chet Baker , John Coltrane , Miles Davis and Bill Evans . He then studied with the guitarist Joe Diorio and moved to the east coast of the USA in the early 1980s , where he worked with the organ trios of Richard "Groove" Holmes and Bobby Buster . He also worked as a sideman in sessions with Junior Cook , Dewey Redman and Curtis Fuller . During this time he met the circle of musicians at the Hillside Club in Waterbury, Connecticut . a. Thomas Chapin and Mario Pavone belonged.

In 1999 Musillami founded the indie record label Playscape Recordings , which has since appeared on modern creative jazz. At the same time Musillami worked as a director or co-director with a large number of ensembles and has so far recorded 14 albums under his own name. His ensembles include the "Motion Poetry" quartet and the "Pivot" quintet with bassist Mario Pavone, as well as an octet with which he recorded arrangements of Thomas Chapin's music, a quartet called Dialect with pianist Peter Madsen and bassist Drew Gress and drummer Matt Wilson and a trio with bassist Joe Fonda and drummer George Schuller .

In 2007 the double album The Treatment was released with a live DVD documentation of his work with violinist Mark Feldman . The double album Pride (2014) features original compositions by Musillami on CD1, implemented by the regular trio, reinforced by the pianist Kris Davis . The second CD features a live recording from New Haven ’s Firehouse 12 from 2007, the trio joined by Mark Feldman.

In addition to his activities as a musician, Musillami is Director of Jazz Studies at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville , Connecticut .
