Bola Ajibola

Abdul-Jabbar Bolasodun Adesumbo Ajibola KBE (born March  22, 1934 in Abeokuta ) is a Nigerian lawyer . From 1985 to 1991 he served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice in his home country and from 1991 to 1994 as a judge at the International Court of Justice . He is also president and founder of the Islamic Movement of Africa, which was established in 1996 .

Life

Bola Ajibola was born in Abeokuta in 1934 and was admitted to the bar at Lincoln's Inn on November 27, 1962 after studying law , which he completed from 1959 to 1962 at the University of London . He then worked from 1962 to 1985 as an attorney in his home country, where he in Lagos , Ikeja , Abeokuta and Kaduna -based firm Bola Ajibola & Co. Legal Practitioners built and managed. The main focus of the company's activities was the area of commercial law with a specialization in arbitration in international disputes. In 1984/1985 he was President of the Nigerian Lawyers Association. From September 1985 to December 1991 he worked as Attorney General and Justice Minister of Nigeria.

In addition, Bola Ajibola was a member of the United Nations (UN) international law commission from 1986 to 1991 . On December 5, 1991, he was elected judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague by the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly. He followed his compatriot Taslim Olawale Elias , who died in office in August of the same year. His choice thus corresponded to the tradition of the court of choosing a successor from the same country on the death of a judge. He worked at the Court of Justice until the regular end of Elias' term of office in February 1994 and subsequently as an ad hoc judge several times. From 1994 to 2005 he was also a member of the Administrative Court of the World Bank , including as its president in 2004/2005.

He is also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague and various other institutions in the field of international arbitration . From 1997 to 2002 he served as one of three foreign judges at the newly constituted Constitutional Court of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina .

In 2005, Bola Ajibola founded the Crescent University ("Crescent University") in Abeokuta . Two years later he was one of the 138 signatories of the open letter A Common Word Between Us and You , sent by the personalities of Islam to "leaders of Christian churches everywhere".

Bola Ajibola has been married since 1961 and has three sons and two daughters.

Awards

Bola Ajibola has been Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire since 1989 and received honorary doctorates from Usmanu Danfodio University in Sokoto (2003) and the University of Agriculture in Abeokuta . He has also been named Honorary Bencher of the Lincoln's Inn Bar Association, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) in his home country .
