Ikeja
Ikeja is the capital and one of the 20 Local Government Areas of the State of Lagos in Nigeria , 30 kilometers north of Lagos Island . Ikeja has 317,614 inhabitants (2006 census). These live on an area of 46.16 square kilometers. The population density is 6,881 inhabitants per square kilometer.
history
In the 15th century there was a settlement of the Yoruba people near the city . In 1472 the area was discovered by Portuguese merchants and came under British influence in 1861 . Since 1960 Ikeja has been part of the independent state of Nigeria. In 1975 it replaced Lagos as the capital of the state of Lagos created in 1967.
On January 27, 2002, 700 people died as a result of multiple explosions at an army base in the city. There was enormous damage to the buildings around the base, including many shops and apartments. A fire from a local market had spread to the ammunition depot of the local barracks of the Nigerian army and caused the ammunition to explode.
Economy and Transport
The city is the industrial and aviation center of the region. The most important branch of the economy is the computer industry. Ikeja is also known as Silicon Valley in Nigeria .
The " Murtala Mohammed International Airport " is located in the city . The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital is located in Ikeja.
