Badagry is a city in Nigeria and the westernmost of the 20 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state of Lagos .

The city of Badagry is located in the extreme southwest of Nigeria on a lagoon, the Badagry Creek . The distance to the Benin capital Porto-Novo is only approx. 15 km, Lagos Island, however, is approx. 31 km away.

The LGA extends over an area of ​​441.36 km² and borders on Ojo in the east . The state of Ogun borders to the north and west and the Atlantic Ocean to the south . The last census in 1991 counted 119,267 inhabitants; the population density was thus 270 inhabitants per km². According to a calculation from 2012, the city itself has 8,529 inhabitants.

history

Badagry was founded in the early 15th century and became an important port for the slave trade . From 1737 to 1748 Badagry was a Dutch colony. As the slave trade was fought, the Christian mission became increasingly important to Badagry. In 1863 the city was annexed by Great Britain and incorporated into the Lagos colony .
